Boothbay takes second twice at Wiscasset
Chilly spring weather is not deterring the Seahawks this track season. In their second outing on another cold, windy afternoon, this time in Wiscasset on Tuesday, April 29, the Seahawks track and field teams delivered solid performances.
Both teams placed second overall behind tough Lisbon teams. Lisbon won the girls event with 147 points, followed by Boothbay Region High School, 144, Richmond, 29 and Wiscasset, 9. For the boys, it was Lisbon, 214, BRHS, 80, Oak Hill, 44, Richmond, 12 and Wiscasset 11.
“The team performance at Wiscasset was quite strong,” Coach Nick Scott said. “Lisbon is the benchmark team whom everyone else in the conference measures themselves against, and our girls' team finished a mere three points behind them.”
At Wiscasset, the girls team delivered several strong performances, and Morgan Crocker was again a driving force. Crocker won her four events (100 and 300m hurdles, long and triple jumps), and with 32 points was the Seahawks’ high scorer.
Crocker has earned a place at both the Mountain Valley Conference championship meet in all four events and is guaranteed a spot in both hurdle events and triple jump at the state championship meet. She is a likely candidate for long jump at states, as well.
“Morgan Crocker had a phenomenal night, winning four events and more impressively clocking the fastest 300m hurdle time in Class C so far this year,” Coach Scott said. “Both her 300 hurdle time and her triple jump mark were personal records (PRs).”
Crocker wasn’t the only BRHS girl to win events. Also, capturing first place finishes were Hannah Morley, 3200m run, Sophia Thayer, 1600m run, Sara Durgan 100m dash, Lisa Pawlowski, 200m dash and high jump, and Nell Anthony, javelin. The 4x100 relay team of Durgan, Sinead Miller, Taylor Walby and Angie Perkins also took top honors.
Boothbay girls dominated the 300m hurdle event, with Crocker, Perkins, Miller and Durgan taking the top four spots. In addition to winning the 3200m race, Morley placed third in the 800m and second in the 1600m. Anthony placed second in discus and shot put, as well as winning the javelin.
The girls’ double-digit scorers at Wiscasset were Crocker, 32, Anthony, 22, Morley 18, Perkins, 16, Durgan, 13, Pawlowski, 12, and Miller 10. In addition to Crocker, Anthony (javelin), Perkins (high jump), and Thayer (1600m) have all earned the chance to compete at the state meet.
The BRHS boys had a good meet as well. Joey Paolillo won the boys only first place finish in the 3200m event, nudging out senior Robert Campbell, who took second two seconds behind Paolillo. Benn Scully placed second in both the 800 and 1600m races.
In field events, Abel Bryer placed second in the javelin and third in discus; Nick Kilgus finished third in long jump and Shane Johnson second in discus. Scully, with 13.5 points, was the boys top scorer for the event and Bryer was second with 10.
“The boys' team also had a strong night, placing second at the meet,” Coach Scott said. “Freshman Joey Paolillo had an impressive debut in the 3200m, which qualified him for the conference race and nearly qualified him for states. Nick Kilgus jumped well in the long jump, qualifying him for the conference championships as well as earning him a spot on the All Seahawk team.”
