Lions Club: Thanks to community for support
Wow. Just wow. The Lions want to thank this community for all of its support over the past month.
We had a great turnout for our pancake breakfast during Fishermen's Festival, which raised more than $800 for our charitable initiatives. We have also received an incredible amount of support to help repair our clubhouse, the former schoolhouse on Lakeview Road.
Many people have made donations in memory of relatives who went to school there or who have served as Lions over the past 60-plus years. We're already well on our way toward repairing the building, which will continue to serve the Boothbay peninsula for many more decades to come. We'll find a way to honor and recognize these donations soon, and we'll also keep you fully informed as we move forward.
Our May 15 meeting was a lot of fun, with Tom Nickerson filling in for president Mike Giles. Tom just can't seem to stay away from that front table for long, and we always appreciate him wielding the gavel, even if it's just for a night. Tom reminded us that May 15 is the annual Peace Officers Memorial Day, and we had a moment of silence in memory of recently fallen police officers and firemen in New England.
After that we had our election for our 2014-2015 officers. Glenn Tilton will be King Lion for that year, a position he last filled in 1991. We look forward to seeing how the club continues to grow and excel in the coming year!
Dinner this week was an amazing pork loin with red potatoes and broccoli. Desert was either rhubarb pie (yummy) or chocolate cake. Charter member Harry Pinkham went home with about five pounds of leftover cake.
Most of the rest of the meeting was spent discussing our upcoming events, of which you will hear more soon.
Fines were light this week, going to Phil Webster for once again parking in the no-parking zone and Phil Chapman for once again wearing the wildest shirt. (I may have to try to beat him next time.) Duane Lewis was fined for being one of the grand marshals in the upcoming Windjammer Days parade, and April Danielson was fined for letting him do it.
Cappy Mann won the weekly 50/50, but donated it back to the club.
Our next meeting will be held on May 28. All are welcome. For more information on the Boothbay Region Lions Club, please contact club president Mike Giles or any other Lion. You can also find us on Facebook (we could use a few more likes) or visit www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/boothbay/index.php.
