Boothbay scores well at Hall-Dale and Cony
The Boothbay Region High School outdoor track team’s regular season came to a close last week, with two meets, one at Hall-Dale on Tuesday, May 20, and the annual “Under the Lights” event at Cony in Augusta on Friday, May 23.
BRHS athletes did well in both meets. At Hall-Dale on May 20, the Lady Seahawks won the competition, barely edging out a tough Lisbon squad. With significant contributions from Morgan Crocker, Hannah Brewer and Angie Perkins, the final score was BRHS, 105, Lisbon, 102, Monmouth, 89, Hall-Dale, 49 and Richmond, 21.
The BRHS boys did not fare as well at Hall-Dale, finishing fourth overall. Lisbon dominated the meet with 151 points followed by Hall-Dale, 78, Monmouth, 57, BRHS, 56, Oak Hill, 29, and Richmond, 2. Speedster Benn Scully and thrower Abel Bryer once again led the Seahawks in scoring.
At Cony, the Seahawks faced their toughest competition of the season, with 12 teams and hundreds of athletes competing. This time it was the BRHS boys who fared best, finishing third overall. Lisbon was way out in front of the competition again, finishing with 183.5 points, followed by Maranacook, 115, BRHS, 60, Cony, 51.5, Hall-Dale, 48.5, Spruce Mountain, 45, Erskine Academy, 42, Gardiner, 31, Oak Hill, 30, Monmouth, 17, Winthrop, 15.5 and Richmond, 4.
The Lady Seahawks finished fifth at Cony, this time behind Lisbon, who they had bested just three days before. Team scores were Cony, 108, Maranacook, 91, Lisbon, 87, Erskine 85, BRHS, 77, Gardiner, 50, Winthrop, 39, Monmouth Academy, 34, Spruce Mountain, 20.5, Kents Hill, 20, Hall-Dale, 18.5 and Richmond, 11.
Coach Nick Scott said he was pleased with the teams’ performances and particularly with the third place finish at Cony.
“I believe that (third place finish) is the best finish we have had at the Capital City Classic (Cony) in a very long time ... perhaps ever,” Scott said. “There were a lot of impressive finishes, but the best performance was that of the boys' 4x400m. The relay team made up of Jack Hasch, Howie Carter, Joey Paolillo and Benn Scully finished in a time of 3:47.77, which is #3 on the All Seahawk Team.”
The Seahawks now turn their attention to the championship season, which begins with the Mountain Valley Conference Championship on Thursday, May 29.
“With the personal records that multiple athletes had last week, it puts us in a really great position for next Thursday's MVC Championships, where we will be fighting for our highest conference finish to date,” Scott said. “The main take away is that we are poised for a big finish on Thursday.”
