Putting it all together for first win
After a couple of frustrating losses to start the season, the Seahawks football team scored early and often on September 14 as they defeated the Sacopee Valley Hawks 50-0 in South Hiram.
Boothbay received the opening kickoff and got a four-yard run from Jesse Peters followed by an 18-yard pass completion from Nick Kilgus to Cormac Miller. Two plays later, a Miller 16-yard run put the ball inside the ten-yard line where Jude Alamo rushed for a six-yard touchdown one play later. Xavier Downing kicked his first of several successful extra points on the night.
The host Hawks failed to move the ball on their first possession and the Seahawks, despite great field position after a fine punt return by Julian Aponte, were unable to capitalize after a sack on fourth down turned the ball back over to Sacopee Valley.
After stopping the Hawks again and taking over at their own 42-yard line, the Seahawks got a 57-yard run by Miller who was hauled down at the one-foot line. But a fumble on first down was recovered by Sacopee, who was unable to deal with the precarious field position as the Boothbay defense was credited with a safety on the first play for a 9-0 lead with 1:30 left in the opening period.
A great return of the free kick set the Seahawks up again as they set up shop at the Sacopee 18-yard line. Two false start penalties around a five-yard gain by Miller were followed by a 23-yard touchdown pass from Kilgus to Kameron Markee, who missed the first two games with a hand injury. After the Downing kick, the Boothbay lead was 16-0.
Starting at their own 38-yard line, the Hawks put together a 10-play drive that moved the ball to the Boothbay 10-yard line but a fourth and four was stopped by the Seahawk defense as they took over at their own eight-yard line. Faced with a third and long, Kilgus hooked up with Miller for a 32-yard gain before the quarterback picked up two yards of his own followed by a seven-yard run by Jason Maddocks. Miller rushed for 19 yards around another false start penalty and Kilgus was sacked moving the ball back to the Sacopee 43-yard line. A 13-yard completion to Peters left the Seahawks with a fourth and nine which they converted into a touchdown, as Kilgus found Peters down the left sideline for the 36-yard scoring completion that upped the lead to 23-0 after the Downing kick with 35 seconds left in the first half.
The host Hawks took the second half kickoff and moved into Boothbay territory with one first down before the Seahawks Shawn Simmons intercepted a pass. That set up a 55-yard touchdown run by Miller on first down which salted away the first win of the season for a team that should be in every game.
On Friday night, the Seahawks entertain Maranacook, which is coming off a one-point win over defending state champion Yarmouth. A week later the Seahawks will host undefeated Traip.
