Bears dominate
The Boothbay Region Seahawks had just picked up a first down and had all the momentum on their side as they were about to go in for the go ahead score when a holding penalty wiped out a 12-yard run by Kam Markee early in the third period on Friday, Sept. 21 as the Maranacook Black Bears came away with a 30-12 victory.
Boothbay held serve with the undefeated visitors on this homecoming Friday night as they were down just four at the break due to missed opportunities on conversions.
The Seahawks scored on just their fourth play of their second possession when Cormac Miller broke outside and ran 73 yards for the touchdown. The kick by Xavier Downing was ruled no good, wide left.
The visiting Black Bears took very little time to get back in the game as they moved the ball 63 yards in just six plays, highlighted by a 44-yard run by Damon Dubois on the first play of the drive. Jesse Evans rushed for 13 yards on a third down and finished off the scoring drive a play later with a seven-yard run to pay dirt with under a minute to go in the first quarter. Quarterback Caleb Castonguay rushed for the two-point conversion to put the Bears on top.
The Seahawks responded right back with a 12-play scoring drive of their own. Boothbay quarterback Nick Kilgus teamed up with Jesse Peters for a 26-yard gain to move the ball into Maranacook territory. Markee eventually scored from a yard out to cap the 13-play drive and put the Seahawks back on top with 6:33 left in the first half. Going for two this time, the Seahawks again were unable to pick up any extra points as the try failed on an incomplete pass.
The entire night the Seahawks seemed like they were one play from away from completely taking over the game, but the Bears would always somehow escape from a big sack or do just enough to avoid disaster.
The visitors were held to just one yard on first down and then were flagged for a false start, setting up a second down with 14 to go. A.J. Stephens picked up 15 yards to keep the eventual winning scoring drive alive. Seven plays later Stephens scored on a 34-yard pass from Castonguay and Evans rushed for the two points as the Black Bears had their four-point lead at the break.
With the opening possession of the second half, the Seahawks were quickly into Bear territory but a holding call and a sack on consecutive plays dug such a hole they were punting three plays later.
After failing to score and take the lead due to that critical holding call, the Seahawks were unable to stop the Bears as they went 64 yards on just five plays as Evans scored from 28 yards out as he also added the two points for the 24-12 lead with 4:19 left in the game.
The Seahawks fumbled on their second play setting up the final score for Maranacook as the Bears improved to 4-0 with the win and the Seahawks dropped to 1-3 despite another quality performance.
The Seahawks have another golden opportunity to pick up a big win on Friday night as they host undefeated Traip Academy at 7 p.m. on Sherman Field.
