Yacht club hosts Optimist championship
For the third consecutive year, the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club hosted the Maine State Optimist Sailing Championship. Seventy-two Optimist Prams with their skippers all under 15 years of age gathered for the annual event and sailed under perfect conditions under the direction of PRO Robin Wallace of Newport Rhode Island.
Andrew Turley of Southport took top honors coming from behind on the second day to overtake Grace Gear of Agamenticus Yacht Club and Hayden Van Alstine of Portland Yacht Club who finished third. These “senior” racers competed in the Red Fleet division.
In the Blue Fleet, top honors were taken by Brooks Reed of the Hingham, Massachusetts Yacht Club with Emma Rose van der Veen of the host Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club finishing second and Tia Freund of Southport Yacht Club in third.
In the White Fleet, Sawyer Reed of the Hingham Yacht Club won first place with Charley Appolinsky of Southport second and Sam Brooks of Portland Yacht Club third.
There were 26 entries in the Green fleet, which is a fleet operated to give young novice racers a chance to compete without the pressure of award competition. The PRO for the Green Fleet was Bill Hunt of BHYC.
Bob and Nancy McCann of the host BHYC chaired the event.
