Fighting for another win
With three games left to play in the season, the Lady Seahawks soccer team may have only one win, but these girls have evolved into a strong, unified force. From goalie Mikayla McFetridge's amazing acrobatics to prevent goals to the team's increased speed, stronger midfield, and improved defense, the team and its supporters should be proud of these young women.
The team's home game against Monmouth Academy on October 1, ended in a 3-0 loss to the undefeated Lady Mustangs. However, it was a perfect example of how well this team works together. As Coach Kate Hossler said, “They all played like rock stars!”
Boothbay's defense prevented Monmouth from scoring until the end of the first half. The Mustangs' first goal was scored by Kylie Kemp. Monmouth's final two goals were scored in the final 15 minutes of the second half by Madison Bumann and Caroline Bonenfant.
McFetridge had 24 saves and Mustang Adriane Gonzales had 7. Boothbay had 10 shots on goal while Monmouth had 31.
“The Seahawks played an outstanding game Monday,” Hossler said. “Aggressive defense by the Seahawks kept the Mustangs from dominating the field for most of the game. Every player put a 100 percent effort into this game.”
Mountain Valley
On September 27 the Lady Seahawks were defeated by Mountain Valley's Lady Falcons, 5-1. Seahawk Sarah Durgan scored Boothbay's only goal in the second half of the game.
Scoring Lady Falcons were K. Virgin (2), S. Klein, T. Smart (2). It was Mountain Valley's second win of the season.
Boothbay managed just seven shots on goal while Mountain Valley had 30.
“The Seahawks took on a worthy opponent in Mountain Valley,” Hossler said. “Unfortunately the team was short players for a second game in a row. The lack of subs made it difficult for the Seahawks to gain any advantage over the Falcons through out the whole game.
Hall-Dale
The Mountain Valley defeat followed a shutout loss to Hall-Dale's Lady Bulldogs, 5-0. With Boothbay down twp players, Hossler said it made for a tough game. Monique Bertin, Anna Baumm, Courtney Brewer and Hannah Winslow had shots on goal but couldn't score.
Goal scorers for the Bulldogs were M. Stottler, S. Lynch and A. Fredericks in the first half, and S. McGibney scored twice in the second. McFetridge saved 21 attempts and Bulldog goalie, O. Maynard, saved 3.
The Seahawks travel to Mt. Abram on Thursday, Oct. 4; play St. Dom's at home on Monday, Oct. 8; and travel to Wales to play against Oak Hill on Thursday, Oct. 11 for their final game of the season.
