Boothbay loses at the buzzer
A last second goal by a Mountain Valley player spoiled the season opening game for the Boothbay Region Seahawks field hockey team in Rumford on Monday, Sept. 8.
Liza White scored the winning goal just as the game was ending to give the Falcons (1-2) a 4-3 victory over the Seahawks.
"I was pleased that the girls played hard after falling behind and were able to come back to tie the game," said BRHS Coach Donna Jordan in an email.
For Boothbay, Sydney Meader had two goals, Nicole Clarke had a goal and an assist and Samantha Carter and Page Brown had an assist. Goalie Erica Eames had six saves.
White scored the first Mountain Valley goal and the Falcons also got goals from Lexi Duguay and Alyvia Lee. Goalie Kassie Thibodeau also had six saves.
A young team
During an interview on Friday, Sept. 5, Coach Jordan said she has "discovered a willingness by a group of young ladies to learn my style of field hockey and the game."
The team of 24 players has 16 freshmen and sophomores, four seniors and four juniors.
"Hopefully we'll be competitive. The players are hungry, getting the jobs done," said Jordan. "We've had a great and very positive preseason. We played a round robin and won one of the three contests and won both of our scrimmages ... at home against Orono and at Lincoln Academy. Three out of the four goals in both contests were scored by freshmen."
Jordan said the team's goalie, sophomore Erica Eames is doing very well. She and goalies from Damariscotta and Brunswick participated in a preseason goalie clinic, taught by former BRHS player and Jordan's daughter, Susan.
"They (the players) have to learn some self-discipline in their play. Learning not to stand around and watch the ball but anticipating," said Jordan.
