Boothbay Harbor Blessing of the Animals draws furry friends
St. Francis of Assisi, born Oct. 3, 1226, is known for his devotion to animals. To honor and remember his birthday, the Congregational Church of Boothbay Harbor held its annual Blessing of the Animals on the church lawn on Sunday, Oct. 5.
Dogs outnumbered cats and humans outnumbered dogs, but all gathered together in harmony for the short service on a glorious fall day.
There were a lot of familiar furry faces among the assembled. Many dogs were greeted by name as they arrived. Sniffs were exchanged, tails wagged and there was a general, good-humored straining at the leash and even some rolling around on the lawn.
The two cats in carriers watched stoically as the dogs behaved shamelessly.
Rev. Sarah Foulger began the service with a quote from Fyodor Dostoevsky.
“Love the animals, love the plants, love everything. If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you perceive it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day. And you will come at last to love the whole world with an embracing love.”
Foulger and the humans read prayers, the four-legged animals were introduced by name and everyone paused to remember former animal friends who had died.
Then Foulger directed the humans to place their hands on their beloved pets and the blessing was bestowed.
Animal communion, in the form of milk bones and cat treats, concluded the service.
The Congregational Church wasn’t the only spot on Sunday for animal lovers.
At St. Columba’s Episcopal Church, Reverend Maria Hoecker said she blessed 13 dogs and one brave kitty.
“It was a gorgeous day,” Hoecker said.
