Oak Hill tops Boothbay; Seahawks defeat Telstar
Columbus Day Weekend was emotion-filled for the Boothbay Region High School varsity girls soccer team. It was a sad day on Oct. 11 as four seniors played and lost their last varsity home game. Oak Hill posted a 1-0 win at Sherman Field during the annual Homecoming game.
But on Columbus Day, the Seahawks’ spirits brightened as they earned the team’s second win of the season. Boothbay defeated Telstar in Bethel, 3-0.
Summer Chamberlain, Courtney Brewer and Cagney O’Brien all scored in the Seahawks’ victory.
This weekend’s results brings the girls’ soccer team’s record to 2-11. Boothbay Region is in 17th place in Western Maine Class C standings. The Seahawks play this weekend was among their best defensive efforts of the season.
Goal keeper Jamie Wheeler posted her first shutout of the season against Telstar, and she made 14 saves on 26 shots against Class B Oak Hill.
Boothbay Region forward Courtney Brewer attributed the team’s strong play this weekend “to being more aggressive on both ends of the field.”
The Seahawks had 24 shots against Oak Hill and the team’s three-goal output against Bethel was the second most of the season.
“It was two of our best games this season. We played aggressively and charged to the ball throughout both games. I’m really happy we played so well this weekend,” Brewer said.
Prior to the Homecoming game, Brewer was joined by her fellow senior captains Sinead Miller, Brenna Alley and Lindsey Buckingham who received special recognition for their efforts on the soccer field. Boothbay Region Boosters Club president Heather O’Brien presented the seniors with water bottles, car decals and bags emblazoned with Seahawk logos.
Boothbay Region played the final home game at Sherman Field instead of Clifford Field as part of the Homecoming Weekend celebration. Brewer said her team had difficulty adjusting to the newly placed orange lines on the football field. However, Brewer said she enjoyed playing on campus.
“I liked playing at the school. It was a special feeling like it was our home turf,” she said.
On Oct. 16, Boothbay Region will end their season with a rematch against Oak Hill in Wales.
