Boothbay wrestler injured in match
Boothbay Region High School wrestler Brandon Andrews sustained an injury during a Dec. 27 match and later transported to the hospital. Oxford Hill wrestler Jeff Merrill had Andrews in an unfavorable position, rolled him over and wrenched his neck, according to BRHS wrestling coach Allan Crocker.
Following the match, Crocker said Andrews “appeared to be fine” and was taken to the hospital as a precaution. On Tuesday, Crocker reported that Andrews was not seriously injured and was “OK.”
BRHS competed in a three-way match last weekend with Oxford Hills and Lincoln Academy in Newcastle. Boothbay Region, a Class C wrestling team, lost both matches to the Class B competitors.
The Seahawks lost 36-30 to Lincoln Academy and 54-24 to Oxford Hills.
Despite the team losses, wrestlers Antonio Maulolo and Howie Carter continued their winning ways. Maulolo remained perfect on the season by winning both matches in his 220-pound weight class. He is 9-0.
In his match versus Oxford Hills wrestler Creighton Mederios. He won by a pin in the first quarter. Medeiros lowered his head and Maulolo took advantage of the mistake.
“It’s called a 27,” Maulolo said. “I grabbed his head and flipped him over. And once you’re on top of him, the key to pinning him is keep squeezing as hard as you can.”
Maulolo won his second match against Lincoln Academy by forfeit.
Carter improved his individual record to 9-1 with wins of Oxford Hills wrestler Jeff Merrill in the 160-pound division. In his victory, Carter said he was confident as soon as the match started.
“As soon as I grabbed him I knew I’d win,” Carter said. “I didn’t think he was in good shape and I knew I could pin him,” Carter said.
Carter won his second match against Lincoln Academy by forfeit.
Other Seahawk wrestlers with victories against Oxford Hills were Nick Labonte (113) and Jeremiah Lucas (285) both by forfeit. Against Lincoln Academy Labonte won by pin, and Dylan Peters (132) and Lucas by forfeit.
Despite the team losses, Crocker believed the experience competing against bigger schools was good for his team. With 218 students, Boothbay Region is small compared to other Class C schools. But Crocker believed competing against Class B schools (Oxford Hills and Lincoln Academy) is good for his team.
“My biggest concern is not getting enough matches for our team,” Crocker said. “Numbers-wise we can’t compete as a team against these schools because we can’t fill all our weight classes. But on an individual basis, all of our wrestlers match up well against their opponents today.”
Crocker also believed his team will see better days. Several of his wrestlers were absent either due to not making their weight or the Christmas break.
“It was not our best day of wrestling,” he said. “Hopefully, we will rebound and wrestle better next weekend.”
Boothbay Region’s next match is at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 3 at Oak High Academy in Wales.
