Seahawks have tough second half at Winslow
In a game they know they needed for any chance at postseason play, the Seahawks were battling former Class B powerhouse Winslow toe to toe, trailing just 14-7 at the half. But in that first half, Boothbay quarterback Nick Kilgus suffered an injury that would force him out of the game. Winslow would turn four second half turnovers into 28 points and a 42-7 Campbell Conference win Saturday, Oct. 13.
The Seahawks tied the score in the first quarter on a 13-yard touchdown run by Jason Maddocks with 1:50 on the clock. The host Black Raiders had opened the scoring on a one-yard run by Zack Guptill. On the first play of the second frame, Winslow took the lead for good on a 15-yard run by Joe Hopkins. Hopkins would also score early in the second half, immediately after one of seven fumbles the Seahawks had on the afternoon.
“I thought we played very tough against Winslow” said third-year head coach Bryan Dionne. “Just like we have all season. To be competing in that setting, coming back to my alma mater was quite a thrill for me, as it was my first time in there as a head coach.
“A win probably would have put us in the playoffs but now we have to look back at that fumble on the goal line in the first game against Freeport. We get that win and we are probably in.”
The Seahawks wrap up the season on Friday night as they entertain Telstar at 7 p.m. on Senior Night at Sherman Field.
