Boothbay junior varsity now 3-3
The Seahawks junior varsity girls basketball team has tallied 3 wins and 3 losses in Mountain Valley Conference competition thus far this season.
Coach Lauren Brown has two sophomores and eight freshmen on this year's roster with four varsity swing players that see significant junior varsity minutes as well.
The team had a strong showing in the season opener on Dec. 11 at Mt. Abram with a 48-13 victory. The girls had a strong defensive game holding Mt. Abram scoreless in the third quarter.
Mackenzie Abbott led the scoring charges with 15 points, while Angie Perkins added 10 points, and Sydney Mercier with eight points.
The first loss of the season came at the hands of the Madison Bulldogs who defeated the Seahawks 51-45 on Dec. 13. Madison had a very aggressive press that found Boothbay down 30-17 at the half.
The Seahawks bounced back with a strong third quarter scoring 15 points to 5 for the Bulldogs, closing the score to 32-35. Jo Shaw had a solid performance scoring 13 points, with Sydney Meader playing strong defense and chipping in 11 points. Summer Chamberlin, Sydney Mercier, Alexis Welch, and Denise Stover also made offensive contributions scoring five a piece.
Wiscasset also beat the Seahawks by six points on their home court on December 15 by a score of 43-37. The Seahawks were tied at half time, but got into foul trouble with two players fouling out in the fourth quarter and had a difficult time stopping Craig who finished with 26 points for the Wolverines.
High scorers for Boothbay were Mackenzie Abbott with nine points, Denise Stover with seven points, and Angie Perkins with six points.
The Seahawks faced Hall Dale on Dec. 19 and came away with a convincing 47-23 win. The girls put together an impressive second half of basketball, outscoring Hall Dale 30-9. Several players contributed to the scoring column with Angie Perkins, Summer Chamberlin, and Jo Shaw each tossing in eight points, and Mackenzie Abbott and Sydney Mercier with six each.
The highlight of the season thus far was an exciting 49-47 overtime victory against Mt. Valley on Dec. 23 with Sydney Mercier scoring off a Sydney Meader steal and assist with just seconds remaining to seal the win.
Returning player Jackie McLoon scored six quick points in the first quarter to help lift the team to a 15-6 lead. Mt. Valley, down 23-15 at half-time, came out strong in the third quarter outscoring the Seahawks 13-8.
Sydney Meader had an impressive defensive game coming up with several big steals and transition baskets scoring a season-high 17 points. Sydney Mercier finished with 10 points, Jo Shaw and Jackie McLoon finished with six each. Alexis Welch had a productive night on the boards grabbing numerous rebounds and tossing in five points.
In the final contest of 2014, the JV girls dropped a tough game at Lisbon High, 27-25. The Seahawks lead 25-20 after three quarters, but defensive breakdowns and a scoring drought in the fourth quarter allowed Lisbon to walk away with the win.
Six Seahawks contributed to the scoring column, led by Sydney Mercier with eight points and Angie Perkins with seven points.
