At the theaters: Downton Abbey, ‘Into the Woods’ and more
The Harbor Theatre
“The Theory of Everything,” based on the memoir “Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen” by Jane Wilde Hawking, stars Eddie Redmayne as Stephen Hawking and Felicity Jones as Jane.
This is the extraordinary story of one of the world's greatest living minds and renowned astrophysicist. With Jane fighting tirelessly by his side, Stephen embarks on his most ambitious scientific work, studying the very thing he now has precious little of — time.
Together, they defy impossible odds, and break new ground in medicine and science. Wednesday, Jan. 7 and Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
"Into the Woods" is a modern twist on several Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy) — all bound together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden and Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them.
“Into the Woods” plays Friday, Jan. 9 and Saturday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m.
Sunday, Jan. 11 there will be a matinee at 2 p.m., then it plays again Wednesday, Jan. 14 and Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.

In “The Homesman,” three women who have been driven mad by pioneer life are to be transported across the country by covered wagon by the pious, independent-minded Mary Bee Cuddy to assist her. Starring Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank. Plays Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 2 and 7 p.m.; Thursday, Jan. 8 at 2 and 7 p.m.
“Downton in Damariscotta”: season 5 will be shown Fridays in January and February, beginning with episode one on Friday, Jan. 9 at 2 p.m. Free to the public.
Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer star in “Elsa and Fred,” the story of two people, who at the end of the road, discover that it's never too late to love and make dreams come true. Friday, Jan. 9 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 10 and Sunday, Jan. 11 at 2 and 7 p.m.
“Force Majeure” was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and leading contender for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film. This film tells the story of a Swedish family on a ski holiday in the French Alps who find themselves staring down an avalanche during lunch one day. Plays Wednesday, Jan. 14 and Thursday, Jan. 15 at 2 and 7 p.m.
