Lions defeat Seahawks
The Boothbay Region High School Seahawks swim team faced the Belfast Area High School Lions at home on Jan. 6. Despite a valiant effort, the Seahawks were unsuccessful at taking the top spot for any events.
The Seahawks did however take several seconds, including: the 200 yard IM (Evy Case), the 500 yard freestyle (Emma Pearce); the 100 yard backstroke (Brenna Alley); the 100 yard breaststroke (Nicole LaBrecque); the 400 yard freestyle relay (Emma Pearce, Brenna Alley, Evy Case and Nicole LaBrecque); and the 200 yard freestyle relay (Evy Case, Genevieve Taylor, Lincoln Hamblett and Nicole LaBrecque).
The Seahawks took several third places: Nicole LaBrecque in the 200 yd. freestyle; Lincoln Hamblett in the 50 yd. and 100 yd. freestyles; Evy Case in the 100 yd. butterfly; Karl Alamo in the 100 yd. freestyle; and Chris Groneng in the 50 yd. freestyle.
There was one new state qualification, Nicole LaBrecque in the 200 yard freestyle. LaBrecque has qualified already for five out of seven events at states, including the 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard IM, 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard backstroke.
For the second time, Karl Alamo came extremely close to qualifying for the 100 yard freestyle. Qualifying time is 59 seconds, and Alamo's time was 59.62 seconds. His previous best was 59.97 seconds on Dec. 16 in the home meet versus Brunswick, which was the first time he broke a minute in that event.
“I’m not quite there yet,” Alamo said. “It's early in the season, hopefully I can make it.”
