Everyone is Maine is eagerly awaiting the onset of spring — though not so much the massive snow melts, which we all hope will not result in severe flooding in basements.

At The First National Bank in Boothbay Harbor, a few workers got sick of waiting and decided to take spring into their own hands.

Brenda L. Blackman and Tammy Serrano went out to the large snowbank near The First's clock sign on Monday, March 2 and decorated it with plastic flowers and spray-painted “Think Spring!” with flowers in the snowbanks on either side of the entrance.

“We got an email asking which branch had the tallest snowbanks,” said customer service representative and branch supervisor Tammy Serrano. “It got me thinking about pictures I've seen on Facebook of spray-painted snowbanks, and I thought we could make ours extra special.”

“It was cold, but lots of fun,” said Business Relationship Officer Brenda Blackman.

The two of them stopped by the Family Dollar store to stock up on plastic flowers, and got the spray paint at Grover's Hardware.

“It's been a long, hard winter for all of us, and we wanted to make people smile,” Serrano said.

On Monday, while they were decorating, cars honked as they drove past; customers coming into the bank have remarked on it in a positive way, according to Blackman.

“We at the bank are in need of spring,” teller Shelley Smith said.

According to Blackman, spring may be closer than we think — she spotted the first robin of the season in her garden this week.
