Boothbay Region girls win YMCA/Rotary Basketball Classic
The Boothbay Region YMCA girls basketball team won all three games last weekend to claim the 2015 Boothbay Region YMCA/ Rotary International Tournament. Boothbay Region hosted five other teams from Wiscasset, Medomak, Oceanside, Winterport and the Central Lincoln County YMCA.
Boothbay Region defeated Oceanside twice during the weekend. The two teams met in the winners’ bracket in the double elimination tournament on Saturday morning. Boothbay Region won 41-32. Later that afternoon, the two teams met in the championship game. Boothbay Region defeated Oceanside, 49-33.
Four Boothbay Region players were named to the girls’ All-Star team: Maggie Larson, Faith Blethen, Ashley Abbott and Helen Hamblett. Other All-Star selection were Shannon James, Wiscasset; Ellie Matthews, CLC YMCA; Sadie Cohen, Medomak; Alydia Brillant and Jordan Lockard, Winterport; and Hope Butler, Kalli Grover, and Kassidy Robinson, Oceanside.
Blethen was named as the tournament’s most valuable player. Medomak won the Sportsmanship Award.
In boys’ action, the Boothbay Region YMCA lost two of their three games. Boothbay Region defeated Medomak 7, 34-29. In the winners’ bracket, Medomak 8 defeated Boothbay Region 33-20. Boothbay was eliminated in the next game by Hall-Dale 34-24.
Oceanside won the boys’ championship by defeating Medomak 8, 42-19. The boys’ tournament had 10 teams; Boothbay Region and CLC YMCAs, Oceanside, China, Skowhegan, Hall-Dale, Gray-New Gloucester, Richmond, and Medomak 7 and 8.
Boothbay Region’s Steve Reny was named to the tournament All-Star team. Other selections were Marcus Christopher, Skowhegan; Gavin Blanchard, China; Bryce York, CLC YMCA; Ashtyn Abbott and Alec Byron, Hall-Dale; Ryan LaChance, Gray-New Gloucester; Ryan Creamer and Nathan Emerson; Medomak 8; and Amos Anderson, Jack Lambardo and Cooper Wirkala, Oceanside.
Oceanside’s Amos Anderson was named the tournament’s most valuable player. The Lincoln CLC YMCA won the Sportsmanship Award.
The tournament also included two shooting competitions. Boothbay Region’s Faith Blethen and Maggie Larson combined for 63 points to win the girls’ Hot Shot competition.
The boys’ NBA 2-Ball competition was won by Richmond’s Nick Adams and Danny Stewart with 47 points.
