Girls tennis notches two wins
The Boothbay Region High School girls tennis team defeated Lisbon and Dirigo recently to bring the regular season record to 3-2.
On May 1, the Lady Seahawks traveled to Lisbon. Boothbay’s first singles player Mackenzie Colby defeated Lisbon’s Katherine George 10-6, while Boothbay’s second singles player, Angela Machon beat Bri Livingston 10-3.
Boothbay’s Anna Baumm, Chloe Hoecker, Ellie Demmons and Eve Dolloff were all victorious in their respective doubles matches. Boothbay went on to sweep the shorthanded Greyhounds 5-0, before Lisbon forfeited the remainder of the matches.
On May 4, the Lady Seahawks beat Dirigo at home 4-1. Boothbay’s Anna Baumm went three sets against Dirigo’s Kiley Palm. Although the second set ended with a tiebreaker, Baumm easily overtook her opponent in the final set, 6-1. Boothbay’s Angela Machon beat her opponent Ariel Hamburg. Machon’s win marked her first back-to-back victories in the second singles position for the Lady Seahawks. First singles player Mackenzie Colby handily defeated Gena Kubesh. During the match, Colby served several aces before going on to win both sets, 6-2, 6-0.
Boothbay Coach Alex Arsenault said he’s happy to see his tri-captains step up their level of play in the last three weeks.
“(Baumm) showed tremendous heart winning that match in the third set. She has lost in the third set before, but she understands now how much actual effort it takes to win in three sets,” Arsenault said.“(Machon) has learned her role at second singles very well. She struggled in the first two matches, but has picked up her play in the last couple matches to show she can win at any position.”
Boothbay’s Emma Rideout and Madison Gaudette won their doubles match, 6-3 6-1 against Summer Kein and Sela Smith. Chloe Hoecker and Eve Dolloff lost their match 5-7, 6-4,1-6 to the Dirgo duo, Karlene Hutchinson and Kayla Brooks.
Overall, Arsenault said the Lady Seahawks have improved greatly in just one week of play, having secured a winning record in five matches.
“These wins are coming because we are starting to believe in ourselves and our skill level,” Arsenault said. “I am very happy with our record at this point.”
The recent victories might have provided the Lady Seahawks with an extra boost of confidence for when they face some of the toughest teams in the Western Class C Conference this week.
Boothbay hosted second seeded St. Doms on Wednesday, May 6 at 4 p.m. followed by another home match against third ranked Hall-Dale on Friday, May 8 at 4 p.m.
