BRHS scores two wins at Wiscasset
Like the weather, the Boothbay Region High School track and field season is heating up. On Tuesday, May 5, BRHS athletes faced competitors from Hall-Dale, Monmouth, Richmond and Wiscasset at Wiscasset. By the end of the afternoon, both Boothbay teams had finished on top.
The boys scored another decisive victory beating second place Hall-Dale by over 60 points. The girls nosed out Monmouth by 3.5 points. BRHS boys scored 127.5 points, followed by Hall-Dale, 62.5, Monmouth, 33, Wiscasset, 28.5, and Richmond, 6.5. The Lady Seahawks scored 90.5 points, followed by Monmouth, 87, Hall-Dale, 46, Wiscasset, 28.5 and Richmond, 23.
“The meet went really well. The boys' team had a comfortable win while the girls reversed the outcome from the previous week against Monmouth,” Coach Nick Scott wrote in an email after the race. “While winning regular season meets is a lot of fun, our main objective continues to be qualifying as many athletes as possible for both the conference and state championship meets.”
Boothbay is well on its way to achieving that goal. As of Tuesday’s race, 21 boys and 10 girls had qualified for the Mountain Valley Conference championship meet. Kyle Alamo (1600m racewalk), Abel Bryer (javelin), Morgan Crocker (hurdles and jumps), Hannah Morley (3200m run) and Angie Perkins (300m hurdle, long jump) are all also assured a place in the lineup for the state championship meet and several BRHS athletes are on the state’s provisional list.
On Tuesday, Dima Gosselin led the boys in scoring with 18 points, followed by Howie Carter (16), Abel Bryer (15), Shane Johnson (14), Joey Paolillo (14), Antonio Maulolo (10) and Jacob Leonard (10). For the girls, Morgan Crocker led the scoring, once again winning the four events she entered (24 points), followed by Angie Perkins (17), Taylor Walby (13), Sinead Miller (12) and Hannah Morley (10).
Scott noted a few memorable performances from the event.
“Dima had a really good night, winning the 100m, placing 2nd in the 200m and anchoring the winning 4x100m team. He also achieved a PR in the shot put. As usual Morgan Crocker won all four of her events and Angie Perkins had a particularly good showing in the high jump, clearing 4'10". Kyle Alamo's 8:14 in the race walk was another notable performance from the meet.”
“Howie Carter is an all around talented athlete whom we've been trying out in a variety of events. His performance in the 800m race (1st place) puts him among the best in the MVC and in the top tier for Class C as well. The event will now become a focal point of his events and training.”
The Seahawks head back to Wiscasset next Tuesday, May 12 to face Mountain Valley, Dirigo and Wiscasset. The meet starts at 3:45 p.m.
