Boothbay Region baseball falls to 0-6
The Boothbay Region High School baseball team nearly broke into the win column last week against Mountain Valley and Winthrop. The Seahawks lost both road games, but they had the tying runs on base in the seventh inning.
On May, 1 Boothbay Region led 6-1 after three innings. But the Ramblers rallied to earn a 9-7 victory. On May 4, Mountain Valley defeated Boothbay Region 3-2.
“We were solid all the way around in both games,” said Boothbay Region coach Josh Garneau. “There were a couple of key errors against Winthrop. And against Mountain Valley, we just didn’t get the key hit.”
On May 6, Boothbay Region looked to earn its first win of the season against Madison. But the game lacked the late inning drama of Boothbay Region’s previous two.
Madison (3-3) had also lost close games earlier this season to Winthrop, 6-4, on April 29, and to Mountain Valley, 5-4, on May 1. But the Bulldogs out-pitched, out-hit and out-fielded the Seahawks in a 17-0 win at Sherman Field.
Madison pitcher Jack Money retired all 15 batters he faced in the five-inning game. Money struck out eight in pitching a perfect game. Madison scored 17 runs on 12 hits and was aided by three Boothbay Region errors.
Seahawk pitcher Nick Burge retired the first five batters he faced. Bulldog first baseman Devon Watt reached on a two-out error in the second. Money followed with a single. Tristan Emery drove them both with a single. And Shawn Wales singled home Emery for a 3-0 Bulldog lead.
Madison scored four more in the third. Burge pitched three innings. He struck out two and walked none.
Garneau said his team simply didn’t play well.
“We threw strikes today, but Madison is the first team in the conference that could really hit,” he said. “They hit a lot of gaps. Our relievers threw strikes, but they had a hard time getting anybody out.”
Money threw a lot strikes too, but Seahawks hitters couldn’t register any hits. The Seahawks managed only two hard hit balls. In the fourth, Zach Vise ripped a line drive down the left field line that was caught. And in the fifth, Carter Babcock hit a deep drive to center field.
Garneau said Money didn’t appear to be overpowering.
“He looked very hittable. I talked to a couple hitters, and they agreed,” Garneau said. “He threw a bunch of fastballs and we couldn’t put them in play. You win a lot of games when you throw strikes and make plays in the field.”
Boothbay Region’s next game is at 4:30 on Friday, May 8 against Mount Abram Regional High School. The Seahawks will travel to Salem Township to play the 1-5 Roadrunners.
