Girls tennis bounces back after two loss skid
During the first week of May, the Boothbay Region High School girls tennis team hit a rough patch when highly ranked St. Dom’s and Hall-Dale high schools swept the Lady Seahawks. But Boothbay bounced back with a recent win against Oak Hill, bringing the Lady Seahawks’ record to an even 4-4 for the season.
On May 6, Boothbay lost at home against third seeded St. Dom’s. While the Lady Seahawks have shown more consistency in their shots and and service game throughout the season, the team fell short of victory with both singles and doubles players struggling to win individual matches against St. Dom’s.
Two days later, on May 8, Boothbay suffered another loss against the second seeded Hall-Dale. In most of their matches, Boothbay struggled to get on the scoreboard. Hall-Dale was by far the strongest team that Boothbay has faced this season, Arsenault said. The Bulldogs lineup included five seniors and a foreign exchange student, who easily defeated the younger and less experienced Lady Seahawks.
“We were disappointed with our play,” Coach Alex Arsenault said. “We are just on the verge of understanding how to win I feel. But still it was very disappointing.”
On May 12, Boothbay rebounded with a win on the road against Oak Hill. Boothbay first and second singles players Mackenzie Colby and Angela Machon netted wins, as well as Boothbay’s doubles partners Chloe Hoecker paired with Madison Gaudette, and Emma Rideout with Eve Dolloff.
“This week will be a good test of these young athletes to see if we can bounce back. I have a feeling we will have a good week,” Arsenault said.
Boothbay is currently ranked in sixth place in the Western Class C Conference.
With already one victory in this week’s win column, the Lady Seahawks will look to get the upper-hand on the road against lower ranked Mountain Valley on Wednesday, May 13 and Monmouth Academy on May 15. Both matches start at 4 p.m.
