It’s a celebration!
Come help us celebrate Boothbay Region Land Trust’s (BRLT) trifecta of achievements. Thanks to your tremendous support, BRLT enters its 35th anniversary year as a nationally accredited land trust, with a successful completion to the stewardship campaign.
To celebrate these remarkable milestones, BRLT is planning a week of fun-filled events that will culminate with a party for the entire BRLT membership at the Newagen Seaside Inn. Participants will visit the scenic vistas, islands, fields and forests that have been protected over the last 35 years, thanks to the incredible support of Boothbay Region Land Trust members and volunteers.
Events will kick-off on Saturday, June 13 with a kayak paddle to Indiantown Island with BRLT Executive Director Nick Ullo. Ullo began at BRLT as a summer caretaker on Damariscove Island back in 2002 with his wife Tracey. Years later, he was hired on full-time as the land steward before becoming executive director in 2010. He recently obtained his Registered Sea Kayak Guide License.
Sunday will offer an afternoon boat flotilla led by BRLT Board Member Jean Hawley, and her husband Bud, along the Rachel Carson Coastal Greenway. The Greenway consists of land trust conserved properties in the Sheepscot River that have been dedicated as a living tribute to environmentalist Rachel Carson. Participants are asked to register for this in advance so they may bring their own boat, or join in on another’s.
On Monday, June 15, past BRLT Executive Director Dawn Kidd will lead a morning hike on Ovens Mouth Preserve in Boothbay. Since leaving Boothbay Region Land Trust, Kidd has been working in the land conservation field as a board member at Maine Coast Heritage Trust. Co-leading the hike is Carolyn Shubert, the very first administrative assistant, and employee for eight years, at the land trust. She is also still working in land conservation as the program coordinator at Pemaquid Watershed Association.
On Tuesday, there will be a late afternoon hike at Ocean Point Preserve with past BRLT employee Julie Lamy. Lamy started as the organization’s executive director, then worked as the first development and outreach director of the land trust before leaving in 2013. She is currently the single staff person for an international nonprofit to stop human trafficking, Friends of Thai Daughters. Co-leading this hike will be past BRLT Lands Manager Jonathan Milne. Milne left the land trust in 2013 for full-time work at LightHawk, a nonprofit that leverages the skills of 200 volunteer pilots to benefit conservation projects.
Wednesday morning will offer a hike on Boothbay Region Land Trust’s newest preserve, Cross River. Current BRLT Lands Manager Michael Warren will lead a tour of this property that now includes a kiosk, maintained trail and small footbridge. As a Registered Maine Guide, Warren has been an asset to the land trust team since 2013.
Nick Ullo will be joining Warren on this hike.
Finally, the week-long celebration will close on Thursday, June 18 with a complimentary barbecue for all Boothbay Region Land Trust members at the Newagen Seaside Inn. Although all other events are free to the public, this event is open to members only. If you are unsure of your membership status, or would like to become a member, please feel free to contact the land trust office or go online at bbrlt.org.
To ensure maximum enjoyment of all these events, advance sign-up is required. For more information, or to register, please contact the Boothbay Region Land Trust at brlt@bbrlt.org or 207-633-4818.
