Vise finishes last game with three hits
Boothbay Region High School slugger Zach Vise concluded his high school baseball career on June 4 by belting three singles against Hall-Dale at Sherman Field.
Vise entered the final week with a .395 batting average. He went hitless against Oak Hill on June 3, but he singled three times in three at-bats against Hall-Dale pitcher Cole Lockhart.
As a four-year starter, Vise learned how to gauge a pitcher’s tendencies. Lockhart typically started each batter off with a fastball and threw an off-speed curve ball when he was ahead in the count.
“I started as freshman and I’ve worked hard to become a good hitter and the best player I could be,” Vise said. “I expected to see the pitches he threw and I hit all of them hard.”
But other Boothbay Region hitters didn’t fare as well. Lockhart surrendered six hits in Hall-Dale’s 12-1 victory. The Seahawks scored their lone run in the sixth inning. Xavier Downing led off with a single and stole second. He advanced to third on a Vise single. Downing scored on a Carter Babock’s ground out. Vise advanced to third on Cameron Crocker’s single. The game ended as Noah Sherburne ground out, which resulted in a double play.
Senior Nick Burge singled in the third inning.
Boothbay Region finished the season 0-16. Despite not winning any games, Vise said he enjoyed playing with his teammates.
“We may not have won any games, but this was a great bunch of guys to play with. We played hard and had a good time which is really what it’s all about,” he said.
Despite not winning a game for the second consecutive year, the Seahawks found themselves in several close games. Boothbay Region lost by one run in extra-innings and twice by two runs. First-year coach Josh Garneau believes his team performed admirably under difficult circumstances.
“I really respect this group for battling all season, especially after some tough losses,” Garneau said. “They didn’t hang their heads. They came to practice every day, stayed positive and played hard the whole season.”
Garneau believes his players need to become better hitters to be more competitive in the Mountain Valley Conference. He encouraged them to make baseball more of a year-round activity. Garneau advised them to travel to the batting cages in Brunswick to improve their swings. He also encouraged his underclassmen to play Babe Ruth and American Legion baseball this summer.
