Girls tennis ends season with loss to St. Dom’s
The Boothbay Region High School girls tennis team’s season drew to a close on Thursday, June 4, as the third-ranked Saints from St. Dominic Academy defeated the sixth ranked Lady Seahawks, 4-1, in the quarterfinal round of the Western Class C playoffs.
Boothbay’s only win of the match came when doubles partners Chloe Hoecker and Ellie Demmons defeated Cassandra Stacy and Zoe Caron 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
Boothbay Coach Alex Arsenault said Hoecker and Demmons won their match in convincing fashion and played their best game of the season.
Boothbay’s other doubles partners, Emma Rideout and Madison Gaudette lost to Hannah Phelan and Laurel Christopher in both sets, 2-6, 1-6.
Mackenzie Colby, the Lady Seahawks first singles player was defeated by Bethany Hammond, the Class C runner-up in the state singles tournament, 0-6, 0-6.
Angela Machon, Boothbay’s second singles player, fought a long, hard match against St. Dom’s Clare Kramer, but in the end, Machon came up a couple of games short. Machon lost 6-4, 4-6, 3-6.
Eve Dolloff made her singles debut by filling in for Boothbay’s third singles position. Dolloff took two games early on, but lost both sets 2-6, 0-6.
The Lady Seahawks ended their season with a 7-5 record, which was one match less in the winning column than the previous year’s record. Next year Boothbay’s junior tri-captains will be returning, so the positions should stay about the same, Arsenault said. Throughout the season, Arsenault gauged his team’s success by how hard his players worked for their wins.
In the Western Class C Conference, Boothbay often faced older and more experienced teams, but Arsenault said his players showed a lot of heart and spirit this season, and that next year’s success will depend largely on how hard they work in the offseason.
