Southport Junior Yacht Club Sailing Foundation Column: Preparations
This week started with four swimmers taking to the cold water for their swim test. The morning class enthusiastically cheered as the new students swam. After they got out of the water they were greeted by their assigned buddy and a warm, dry towel. We are excited to welcome Philip Nemec, Henry Roth, Penelope Thorp, and Abigail and Mia Dupee to our program and hope they enjoy their time on the water.
The 420 class had an exciting week, consisting of a race day, a match racing tournament, and some students even had the opportunity to go on big sailboats. On Tuesday, the students participated in a race day with medium wind, and otherwise good conditions. Sally Apolinksy and Tessa Houston earned first place, and Emma Jacobs and Kelley Phippen got second.
On Wednesday, they had a match racing tournament. Tessa Houston and Isaiah Reid won the competition out of twelve boats. It was a new and fun challenge for the class, as they had not had a formal match racing tournament this summer.
Throughout the week, 420 students also had the opportunity to sail on a J24 and a J100. Mr. Lorentzen and Mr. Freund graciously offered to host sailors on their boats. It is important for our sailors to experience these larger boats because normally they sail smaller boats. Having this big boat experience will help prepare the students for sailing in the future. We would like to thank the Lorentzen family and Freund family for their generosity.
Optis spent the week preparing for the Maine State Optimist Championships that the SJYCSF will be hosting on Aug. 11 and 12. To prepare, they had a race day on Tuesday. Bryce Jacobs came in first with Charlie Apolinsky closely following in second place; however, Blake Erhard, who was not present, is still leading the August series.
On Friday, the morning class sailed 420s for the second time this summer. They enjoyed the experience so much last time that the instructors decided to do it again. Just as it is good for the 420 students to experience different types of boats, it is also beneficial for the morning class to do the same.
Also on Friday, the afternoon class turnabouts raced with the 420s. With a modified course, Logan Abaldo, sailing a turnabout was able to get first place in one of the races.
This coming week the SJYCSF is excited to host the Maine State Optis and the Ice Cream Social. We hope to see everyone at the Ice Cream Social on Thursday evening at 7 p.m.
Lastly, the Junior Sailing Program Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 21 at the Southport Town Hall. All participants in the Sailing Program and family members are encouraged to attend this fun event. Tickets will cost $7, which will include lasagna, bread, and dessert. Families are asked to bring a green salad that can be shared at the table.
