Squirrel Islanders participate in 72nd regatta
The 72nd Arthur Hale Veasey Memorial Regatta was held at high tide at the Cove Beach on Squirrel Island on Aug. 23. The event, which continues to be held in honor of its founder, draws all ages together for fun and competition. Three generations of the Veasey family hosted the regatta.
The competition includes diving and swimming events for all age groups. Winning the 9 and under diving was Deuce Morton with a front drive and cannonball, followed by Quinn Hershberg and Lily Spaeth. The 10 and older diving competition was won by Anna Howaniec with a round off and a race dive, followed by Crosby Fay and Julia Wagner.
Matthew Wilkerson finished third in the 4- to 6-year-old crawl stroke with Charlotte Slayton placing second and Emma Knake winning the event. The group’s backstroke results mirrored the results of the crawl stroke.
Deuce Morton won both the 7- to 9-year-old freestyle and backstroke. Jillian Lamb finished second and Jack St. Phillip placed third in the freestyle. Quinn Hershberg finished second and Jack St. Phillip placed third in the backstroke.
Winners of the 10- to 12-year-old freestyle event were Jack Hershberg in first, Julia Wagner in second and Maddie Spaeth in third. The backstroke event was won by Julia Wagner. Kaili Savage and Ryan O’Hare finished second and third.
The freestyle race around the diving float included a sizable group of both young and old. The event was won by Beebe Jackson. Jack Hershberg and Julia Wagner finished second and third.
The adult relay was won by the team of John Veasey, Edwin Sirois, Zoe McKenzie and Beebe Jackson. Second place was won by the team of Jay Bolen, Dr. Morton, Priscilla Fay and Ann Reis. Placing third was the Spaeth team of Eric, Karl, Martha and Hannah.
The regatta is one of many outdoor activities Squirrel Islanders enjoy throughout the summer season and it continues to draw multiple generations from island families.
