Maranacook defeats Boothbay Region, 27-0
The Maranacook Black Bears used a high-powered running attack to defeat Boothbay Region 27-0 on Sept. 11 in Readfield. The Seahawks kept Maranacook out of the end zone in the first quarter, but the Black Bears scored their first of four touchdowns with 4:58 remaining in the first half.
Maranacook capped off an 11-play, 52-yard drive in seven minutes and two seconds. All 11 were running plays. The Maranacook quarterback Kyle Morand ran 20 yards on a sweep play for the score. Morand scored on a rush for the two-point conversion.
The Black Bears scored a touchdown in the third quarter and two more in the fourth in the 27-0 victory.
Boothbay Region has been shutout in both games this season. The Seahawk offense has been plagued by turnovers and inability to convert on third down. Despite the struggles on offense, Coach Bryan Dionne played hard against a tough opponent.
“Maranacook is one of the biggest teams in our league. We knew it was going to be tough game, but I’m proud how hard our guys played,” Dionne said.
The scheduled isn’t getting any easier for the winnless Seahawks. Defending Class D State Champion Oak Hill comes to Boothbay Harbor Friday night undefeated. Dionne believes his team needs a great week of practice to prepare for a talented and deep Oak Hill squad on both sides of the ball.
Dionne is looking for better movement from the offensive line to break the team’s scoring drought.
“We really need to do a better job blocking upfront. Our lineman need to concentrate on moving their feet,” Dionne said.
This was the Maranacook Community School’s first game of the season. Boothbay Region is 0-2 in Western Maine Class D.
The Seahawks host Oak Hill of Wales at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 18 at Sherman Field. Oak Hill has won both of their games this season beating Old Orchard Beach and Dirigo.
