Wiscasset soccer still in hunt for a playoff spot
Although school has only just begun, the Wiscasset Middle High School soccer season is nearing the half-way mark.
And as the Wolverines near homecoming and the season's second half, the teams will need to begin winning games if they want to make it to the Class C playoffs.
With a little less than a month left, both teams are still in contention for playoff spots and both have cleared arguably the hardest parts of their schedules.
Girls suffer injuries, losses
The girls team is coming off consecutive losses against several of their Class C South rivals. On Thursday, Sept. 17, the team hosted rival Lisbon High School for a match-up with the ninth-ranked Greyhounds. Wiscasset, which has a small bench this season, suffered a pair of injuries, including a serious one to the goalkeeper, and Lisbon was able to win, 5-0.
On Monday, Sept. 21, the Wolverines traveled to Madison for a game against the third-ranked Lady Bulldogs. The Bulldogs were able to bite the shorthanded Wolverines and win, 9-0. The win moved Madison to 4-0-2.
Wiscasset currently finds itself at 12th place in the South Class C standings and only points behind 11th-ranked Carrabec for the final playoff spot.
Boys nearly knock off number one
On Wednesday, Sept. 16, the Wolverines weren't able to overcome a one-goal deficit at Monmouth Academy and fell, 2-1. The Mustangs have been one of the better teams in the state in the early goings, and the win pushed them to 6-1 overall, and first place in the league.
On Friday, Sept. 18, the boys hosted the Lisbon Greyhounds for a match-up between two long-time Class C West foes. In their first meet up in what is now called Class C South, the Greyhounds were able to run past their rivals, 4-0. The win pushed the Greyhounds record to 5-1 overall, which gave them sole possession of fourth place in the league.
Wiscasset currently sits at 0-5 and is 14th in the league. To qualify for the playoffs, they will have to leapfrog number 13 Traip Academy (also 0-5), number 12 Winthrop High School (0-4-1), number 11 Dirigo (1-4) and number 10 Mt. Abram (1-3) before the end of the season.
