BRES field hockey advances to championship game
The Boothbay Region Elementary School field hockey team advanced to the league championship game Thursday. BRES defeated Great Salt Bay Community School of Damariscotta 7-3 in the Busline League semifinals at Perkins Field.
Leading the Boothbay Region scoring effort was Chloe Arsenault. She scored four goals. Wildcats Kali Andrews and Kylie Brown each tallied goals. Josey Smith had a goal and two assists. And Kayla Latter had an assist.
Great Salt Bay had two goals by Brittany Hartley and one by Shealyn Clifford.
Boothbay Region led after the first half 4-1. The Wildcats continued their dominance with three more goals in the second half.
Despite the win, Boothbay Region coach Charlinda Carlson believed her squad didn’t play as sharp as it had in previous games. The Wildcats are 7-2 and ranked second in the Busline League. But in their encounter with No. 3 GSB, Boothbay Region struggled with communication. Carlson said miscommunication led to several obstruction penalties and too many penalty corners for the opposition.
But Boothbay Region stretched its 4-1 halftime lead with three second half goals by Arsenault.
“Chloe Arsenault pushes it in the cage every time for us,” Carlson said. “Three of her goals were unassisted. And she pushed the ball past three defenders on several occasions.”
Boothbay Region will play Troy Howard Middle School of Belfast in the championship game. The game will be played at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 19 at Perkins Field. The Wildcats lost twice to No. 1 Troy Howard Middle School this season. Troy Howard won both games by one goal and one contested went into overtime.
