UNE premieres film about Maine Holocaust survivor
November 9, 2015, marks the 77thanniversary of Kristallnacht or the “Night of Broken Glass,” when a deadly pogrom was launched against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and Austria. The night is considered by many to be the beginning of the Holocaust.
To commemorate the lives that were lost on that night and in the years of intense Jewish persecution that followed, the University of New England’s Center for Global Humanities will host the film premiere of “Max: Surviving the Holocaust,” by UNE film producer Daniel Lambert.
The film was borne out of Lambert’s interviews with Portland resident and Holocaust survivor Max Slabotzky. It tells the harrowing tale, in Slabotzky’s own words, of his time in hiding during Nazi occupation of his native Belgium, his capture by the S.S., and his survival of Auschwitz concentration camp as a young boy.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at the Ludcke Auditorium on UNE’s Portland Campus (716 Stevens Avenue) from 6 to 8 p.m. A reception will be followed by the screening at 6:45 p.m., and the event will conclude with a question-and-answer session with Mr. Slabotzky.
UNE’s Center for Global Humanities is a public forum designed to introduce students and members of the broader community to the exploration of the greatest issues facing humanity today. Events are held at UNE’s Portland Campus and live-streamed to UNE’s beautiful campus in Tangier, Morocco, and points elsewhere around the globe.
