Lady Seahawks edge Cougars, 36-30
The Boothbay Region Lady Seahawks basketball team remains unbeaten (11-0) after a 36-30 hard-fought win at home over the Dirigo Cougars (6-4) Thursday night, Jan. 7.
Boothbay shot out of the gate on a 9-0 run, but Cougar Coach Karen Magnusson called two timeouts in the first four minutes to calm he players down and to correct their mistakes. Her players responded with an 8-0 run.
The Lady Seahawks controlled most of the second quarter, holding the Cougars to only two points, and led at halftime, 20-10.
Boothbay built its lead up to 14 points, 27-13 halfway through the third quarter, but the Cougars didn’t quit and stepped up its defensive pressure on Boothbay’s top scorers, Page Brown and Faith Blethen. The Cougars went on a 10-2 run to end the quarter and trailed by six, 29-23, heading into the final frame.
With just over two minutes to play, Dirigo cut Boothbay’s lead to two, 30-28, but junior Kate Friant got free for a layup and Brown got free for an easy basket and added two free throws to seal the win.
Brown led Boothbay with 13 points and Blethen scored 11, including 3 three-pointers.
Sabrina Daoud led Dirigo with 11 points, followed by Lauren Henderson with nine.
