Got votes? BRHS standout seeks Hood scholarship
In this election year, the Boothbay Region High School community is urging everyone to vote early and vote often for senior Hannah Morley in her quest to win the $5,000 Hood Milk Sportsmanship Scholarship.
As one of the most accomplished student-athletes in school history, Morley is hoping to become just one of 18 students in New England to receive the honor. If she wins, Morley will attend a ceremony in the Sports Museum at TD Garden in Boston, home of both the Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins. Voting is ongoing through April 22 at hood.com/scholarships and people are allowed to vote every day if they choose, according to the scholarship guidelines.
Her considerable accomplishments aside, she has also inspired her peers to create a video for the scholarship bid, many of whom are featured in the one-minute clip produced with cooperation from local cable access Channel 7.
In the video and using a bit of creative license, Morley's many talents are featured — dunking a basketball, running cross country, sinking three-pointers, pulling one-handed chin-ups and even spotting BRHS Principal Daniel Welch as he attempts to lift weights.
Gabe Purin, a fellow graduating senior and Channel 7 intern, volunteered to help make the video to showcase Morley's accomplishments.
“Hannah is an elite athlete and displays even better sportsmanship,” Purin said. “She's deserving of the award, I hope the word gets out.”
Larry Brown has witnessed Morley's achievements firsthand during his time as BRHS School Resource Officer.
“What sets Hannah apart is her level of community involvement,” Brown said. “She really has a commitment to school, academics and the community at large.”
To be eligible for the scholarship, high school seniors must have proven their ability to put the spirit of sportsmanship above winning while participating in a varsity sport. Students also must have earned a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher and performed volunteer work in the community.
In this case, Morley has far exceeded the requirements. She is the senior class president and salutatorian; a member of the student council and president of the Interact Club, a youth group of the Rotary Club; President of the YMCA Leaders Club; and a student representative on the YMCA Board of Trustees. In 2015, Morley was honored as the Boothbay Region YMCA Youth of the Year, and she was chosen as a delegate to Girls State and went to Washington, D.C. as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders. Most recently, she gained statewide attention as the co-captain of the BHRS girls basketball team, who won the Class C South championship in March.
In February, Morley was awarded the Maine Principals Award, and was named to the McDonald's Senior All-Star and the All-Star Senior Academic teams.
Morley was also named the April/May honoree of the Channel 6 Teens Who Care award.
With the cost of college soaring, the Hood Scholarship offers a valuable financial stipend. Now in its seventh year, the award recognizes the best in scholar-athletes across New England. For Brown, who nominated Morley for the Channel 6 award, it's time for the community to return the favor.
“Hopefully people recognize her efforts and get the word out about the scholarship,” Brown said. “I urge them all to vote.”
