Seahawks look to take a step closer to championships
The 2016 Seahawk boys tennis team has high aspirations this season. Last year, with an 11-1 regular season record, we lost to Waynflete in the Western Maine playoff semifinals; we aim to go deeper this year. Last year, we lost to Hall Dale in the Mountain Valley Conference championship match; we aim to win MVCs this year.
In singles play, we have two experienced seniors — co-captains Daniel Drummond and Nick Gorey — returning; Duncan Drapeau, a junior and a doubles mainstay for us last year, will also step up and compete in singles.
To go the distance, we will also need strong doubles teams. I am counting on returning sophomore Max Hoecker, juniors Riley Spear and Griffin Kane, and senior Nick McCullough to anchor our doubles play.
I am also excited to have three newcomers to our squad: freshman Henry Drapeau and juniors Dima Gosselin and Joey Paolillo. Henry plays often with his family and has worked with Chantalle Lavertu in her clinics at the YMCA. Dima and Joey are learning quickly.
Throughout the season, therefore, we will have seven players competing in challenge matches to fill four countable-match doubles positions.
Half of our squad is currently away on exciting school trips, but those of us in town will be practicing each day weather permits.
Please come out and support Boothbay Region boys and girls tennis!
