Seahawks soar past Eagles 14-4
Despite losing a key player, the Boothbay lacrosse had no problem defeating Lincoln Academy 14-4 May 10 at Sherman Field. Captain midfielder Kate Friant was disqualified after receiving her second caution. This required Boothbay change and rearrange their alignment.
Attacker jackie McLoon was one of the players who saw more action on the defense following her teammate’s disqualification.
“She (Friant) is a big part of our team. We really had to communicate better with each other because Kate is more like our field general out there, but everyone stepped up and did the job,” McLoon said.
McLoon was the game’s leading scorer with six goals. Attacker Sydney Meader scored four. Both McLoon and Meader continuously cut toward the cage hoping to draw defenders out of position.
“I’d cut to an open place and my teammates did a good job getting me the ball,” Meader said.
Other Seahawks scoring were Hannah Cola, Alexis Welch, Alexis Davison, and Helen Hamblett.
The Seahawk defense also played a strong game. Boothbay defenders used effective communication in tracking the Lincoln Academy cutters.
“Our zone defense is focused on calling out the cutters,” McLoon said. “ Lincoln has a lot of good ballhandlers that cradle the ball really well, but our defense did a good job talking to each other and preventing them from taking a lot of good shots.”
Seahawk goalkeeper Page Brown stopped 11 shots.
Boothbay is 3-2. Lincoln Academy is 1-4. Boothbay’s next game is at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 12 against Oceanside of Rockland at Sherman Field.
