Southport Junior Yacht Club Sailing Foundation
Over the last two weeks in Cozy Harbor, sailors have experienced a variety of weather conditions, including heavy winds, pea soup fog, storm waves, sunny skies, and many BMD’s (Beautiful Maine Days). We welcome our new sailors to the program and early bird swimmers from last summer: Gabriella Moen, Stella Field, Taber Gale, Harry Renfro, Max Cichoski, William Maddox, Hannah Moreno, Sonya Hutzleman, Morgan Peterson, Sabrina Fairfeld, Rachel Phippen, Parker Baker and Meghan Kershaw,
The morning class had a lovely week of sailing. Despite rough conditions, they were able to get out on the water every day. Due to the fog on Friday, the kids had to stay in the harbor but were still able to have a fun day of sailing, mixing the three levels of students.
In the afternoon class, the turnabouts had a week of reviewing tactical skills that ended in a race day on Thursday. Congratulations to Robert Shaw and Graham Harris for earning first place overall.
The optis had a great week of drills and also had a race day. They sent two sailors to the Junior Olympics Sailing Festival in Northeast Harbor, three hours away from Southport. The Southport Opti sailors handled the intense wind conditions well with Nate Rideout earning eighth place overall and 5th place in red fleet and Charlie Apolinsky earning third place overall and first place in blue fleet.
The 420s also had a good week, mixing the beginner and advanced classes. The wind was strong and they sailed across the Sheepscot to Five Islands on a few days and practiced boat handling. A few of the students also got the chance to sail on the J24, Wabi Sabi. Four boats and eight sailors were also sent to the Junior Olympics where Max Freund and Claudia Bauman earned thirteenth, Dane Phippen and Sara Morrison earned ninth, Andrew Turley and Jason Goldsmith earned sixth, and Emma Jacobs and Kelley Phippen earned fourth. Congratulations to all the sailors who competed in the regatta and thank you to the parents, John Rideout and Stephanie Morrison, for helping the transportation of the 420’s and the coach boats.
Please join us tonight, Thursday, July 21, for our first Ice Cream Social of the season. It will be a fun evening filled with delicious ice cream and a variety of toppings.
The next Bingo is on Thursday, August 4 at 7 p.m. We welcome all family and friends! Thank you to everyone who has helped make these last few weeks of sailing possible and we look forward to the rest of the summer!
