Boothbay beats Dirigo, 5-3
The Boothbay Region High School field hockey team (1-0) opened its 2016 season with a 5-3 win at Dirigo (0-1) Wednesday, Aug. 31.
According to BRHS coach Donna Jordan via email, “The first 12 minutes of the game had a lot of goal scoring before both teams found their defensive rhythm.”
Dirigo, which was 12-3 in Class C last season, scored first on a goal by Kayla Brooks on an assist from Grace Timberlake.
Two minutes later, Sydney Meader tied the game on an unassisted goal. Boothbay took the lead, 2-1, at the 19:36 mark of the first half on a goal by Kayla Lewis, who was assisted by Page Brown.
Dirigo quickly answered with another goal by Brooks 34 seconds later, off an assist by Sophia Jacques.
Meader got her second goal of the game, off an assist from Josey Smith, to give Boothbay a 3-2 lead. Dirigo tied the game five minutes before halftime, but freshman Chloe Arsenault gave the Lady Seahawks a 4-3 lead with a goal two minutes before halftime, after receiving a pass from Brown.
At halftime, the Seahawks made a few adjustments concentrating on better ball movement against the Cougars. Jordan said strong midfield defensive play and solid transition play by Kylie Michael, Sydney Mercier and Jo Shaw kept Dirigo scoreless in the second half.
With seven seconds remaining in the game, Kayla Lewis scored her second goal of the game on a pass from Brown during a penalty corner play.
Boothbay will host Lisbon at Perkins Field on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 4 p.m. for its first home game of the season.
