Seahawks crush Windjammers in football season opener
It seems Boothbay football coach Bryan Dionne’s pre-season observation that his team had a lot of players who wanted to play football was right. The Seahawks took to the field Sept. 3 for the season opener against Camden Hills and crushed the Windjammers 39-6.
Boothbay rolled up 303 in total offense in scoring six touchdowns in the victory. According to Dionne, the players have rallied around one another as the team prepared for its first season as a club sport.
“I’m getting the feeling this group may turn out to be the most selfless team I’ve ever coached,” Dionne said. “There is a growing level of focus on this team and it’s exciting to watch.”
Boothbay dominated the action on both sides of the ball in defeating Camden Hills. The Seahawks built a 33-0 lead before surrendering a fourth quarter touchdown to the host Windjammers.
The Seahawks had no problem moving the ball either on the ground or through the air. Boothbay took a 6-0 first quarter lead on running back Bryan Otero’s 18-yard run. Boothbay increased its first quarter lead to 12-0 on fullback Carter Babcock’s 12-yard run.
In the second quarter, the Seahawks’ domination continued. Quarterback Duncan Drapeau threw the first of his two touchdown passes as he connected with running back Brandon Andrews on a 24-yard scoring pass. Later, Babcock scored his second rushing touchdown on a 28-yard run and freshman running back Michael Hollowell ran 57 yards for the half’s final score, giving Boothbay a 30-0 lead.
In the third quarter, Drapeau completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to halfback Draco Peaslee for the team’s final score.
Coach Dionne was pleased with his team’s performance, but he believes the team can play better.
“I’m real happy with how we played, but we still made a lot of mistakes. There is still a lot of things we can improve upon,” he said.
The Seahawks will host the Windjammers at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 at Sherman Field.
