Boothbay scores second consecutive gridiron victory over Camden Hills
As Hall of Fame baseball player Yogi Berra might say, “It was deja vu all over again” for the Boothbay football team Sept. 9 as the Seahawks defeated Camden Hills for the second straight week.
Boothbay won the home opener with a 33-14 victory over the Windjammers at Sherman Field. The second win looked a lot like the first as the Seahawk offense rushed for 210 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns in the win. Boothbay built a 33-0 lead midway through the third quarter before Camden Hills scored.
Seahawk quarterback Duncan Drapeau rushed for the game’s first score with a five-yard run in the first quarter, giving Boothbay a 7-0 lead. In the second quarter, running back Bryan Otero scored on an eight-yard run. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the Seahawks with a 13-0 lead. On the Seahawks’ next possession, running back Draco Peaslee rushed six yards for the third touchdown and kicked the second of his three extra points.
Camden Hills’ hopes of a second half comeback were dashed after kick returner Hunter Arsenault took the second half kick-off 76 yards for a touchdown. With Boothbay leading 26-0, running back Carter Babcock ran 43 yards for the team’s final score.
Boothbay’s rushing attack has rolled through the Camden defense with strong play from its offensive line. For two weeks now, the Seahawks’ offensive line has dominated the line of scrimmage. Lineman Jeremy Holbrook believes the unit’s success is due to cohesiveness among the five linemen.
“We call ourselves ‘The Fist’ because there are five of us,” Holbrook said. “We’re all good friends and talk constantly about ways to play better. We discuss fixing a blocking assignment or how we can help each other out so we all play better as a unit.”
The team’s dominant performance Friday night allowed players to experience moving to a new position. On defense, Cameron Crocker usually plays on the line. After Boothbay built a sizable lead, he moved to middle linebacker and called the defensive signals.
“It was pretty cool. You’re back there watching the offensive formation and you get to attack the ball. And you’re in every play. It was a lot of fun,” he said.
Boothbay is 2-0 during it first club season. Camden Hills is 0-2.
Boothbay will host the Aroostook Valley Gladiators, a club team from Berlin, New Hampshire, at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16.
