BRHS girls soccer drops three after strong start
Despite a three-game losing streak, Boothbay Region High School girls soccer coach Ben Powell remains upbeat as the squad tries to build on its opening victory against rival Wiscasset.
On Sept. 6, the girls lost a 4-3 heart-breaker to host Dirigo, giving up the tying goal with 10 seconds left in the game. Dirigo eventually won the contest in the second overtime. According to Powell, the Seahawks started strong with a goal by Angie Perkins via a well-placed feed by Reagan Cola. Dirigo quickly scored the equalizer on a deflected ball that resulted in a breakaway.
Boothbay took the lead before halftime with a long shot from outside the 18 by Cola. In the second half, the Seahawks extended their lead to 3-1 on a header by Cola, on a perfect corner kick by Perkins. With 10 minutes left in the game, the Boothbay fortunes began to change. Cola collided with one of the Dirigo girls and hurt her knee. That left Boothbay with only two substitutes. The heat and lack of depth took its toll as the game wore on. The victory was nearly in hand but in the closing seconds Dirigo was able to squeak one by for the tie.
In overtime, the Boothbay girls ran out of steam and gave up the win with about two minutes left, said Powell.
“A very tough loss for the girls, they dominated possession nearly the entire game and had way more shots on goal,” said Powell after. “Dirgo deserves a lot of credit for not giving up and fighting until the last minute. We’ll see them again at home towards the end of the season and can hopefully get a split.”
Hoping to change their fortunes after a tough loss, the Seahawks visited Lisbon, where they dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision on Sept 8. The team was missing a few players due to injury and only had a handful of substitutes available. Lisbon struck twice in the back end of the first half to take a 2-0 lead at halftime. The Seahawks played better in the second half but couldn’t capitalize on a few prime scoring chances, said Powell.
“After giving up four goals in each of the previous two games the defense played much better,” he said. “There were great performances from Colette Bertin, Chyanne Rogers, and ReAnna Heino. Colette Perry also made a big contribution coming off the bench. We will see Lisbon again for our homecoming game and with a full-strength squad we’ll have a great chance.”
On Saturday Sept 10, the Seahawks were walloped 9-0 by Monmouth, likely the best team in the Class C Mountain Valley Conference, said Powell.
The Seahawks were scheduled to face Mt. Abram High School on Tuesday, Sept 13. in Boothbay.
