Boothbay splits two in soccer action
The Boothbay girls soccer team had hard luck Sept. 15 against Winthrop but rebounded in style with a 5-0 thumping of Carrabec on Sept. 20.
The loss to Winthrop followed a pattern in which Boothbay held its own defensively but couldn’t muster much of an offensive attack. Despite this, the Seahawks finally broke a nearly two-game scoreless drought with a long goal by Tori Morin in the closing minutes of the second half. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late.
“We were never able to get a good rhythm going in the second half,” said Seahawks head coach Ben Powell after the game. “There were a few good chances in the first half which were not converted.”
The loss was the third game this year that Boothbay lost by one goal. The Seahawks were at the wrong end of a 1-0 shutout by Mt. Abram the previous game.
The team flipped the script on Sept. 20 with a 5-0 shellacking of visiting Carrabec. Angie Perkins started the scoring with a goal off a rebound inside the 18-foot mark after Carrabec had dominated the first 10 minutes of the game. The Seahawks struck quick in the second half with another goal by Perkins and then put any drama to rest with a goal by Summer Chamberlin.
“It was great to see,” said Powell. “The team had been in a scoring drought with only one goal in their previous four games.”
Not satisfied with a three-goal lead, the Seahawks continued the pressure and netted their fourth via a corner kick from Perkins that landed directly in front of the net. It was put home up by Evy Case. The Boothbay squad finished the scoring with Reagan Cola putting a volley into the corner of the net.
The defense continued its stellar play led by Chyanne Rogers, ReAnna Heino, and Maddy Gaudette who held Carrabec in check all game. Hannah Cola — starting for the first time in goal — was steady throughout despite consistent pressure from Carrabec.
The 2-5 Seahawks are scheduled to visit Hall-Dale on Sept. 22 at 4 p.m.
