Southport sisters win Windjammer Days Boating Treasure Hunt
The Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Annual Windjammer Days Boating Treasure Hunt.
Sisters from Southport Allie Withee, 15, and Cate Withee, 12, won the 50th Annual Windjammer Days Boating Treasure Hunt.
They completed the treasure quest by following clues to five green balls and retrieving coins in their 12-foot skiff as part of the motorized Treasure Hunt. Then they were the lucky winners of the 50/50 drawing.
Clues were strategically placed throughout the harbor and included Factory Cove Breakwater, Old Sardine Factory, Sprucewold Beach: watch the Fleet of Sail come in here, Burnt Island (North side) third oldest lighthouse in Maine, Southport Bridge (second most open in the U.S.) and Mill Cove (shipwrecks).
“It was a great activity for their age group and they very much enjoyed it. And they are thrilled they won the 50/50 raffle! Sisters, Allie and Cate can often be seen “skiffing” the waters around Pine Cliff, Capitol Island, Townsend Gut, and the Harbor during the summer season,” their mother Suzanne Withee said.
The Boating Treasure Hunt was sponsored by Wyman and Simpson Inc. and the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber of Commerce. Two courses were set up, one for non-motorize vessels and one for motorized.
Participants followed clues and retrieved coins from green balls or buoys depending on the course and were entered into a 50/50 raffle.
