Yacht club appoints Junior Sailing director
Neil Newton, Commodore of the Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club, and Past Commmodore Andy Holmes, Chair of the Junior Program, announce the appointment of Sarah “Sally” Lloyd as Director of the Junior Sailing Program.
Lloyd has coached the High School Club Sailing program, started and operated by the Yacht Club since its inception two years ago.
Now, in addition to those continuing responsibilities, she will direct the 9-week junior sailing program operated during the summer for children of region residents and visitors and will supervise waterfront vessel and launch operations at the club.
Lloyd is a native of Ipswich, Mass., but now lives in Boothbay Harbor, where she spent most of her summers growing up. A graduate of Ipswich High School, she went on to study at Maine Maritime Academy where she majored in small vessel operations.
Lloyd holds a 100-Ton United States Coast Guard Masters License with both towboat and sail endorsements. While at Maine Maritime she was a member of the varsity sailing team. She is a fully certified U.S. Sailing Association instructor as well.
Her competitive sailing includes two years as a member of a professional racing team aboard Trip 41 as well as sailing as skipper aboard a J-29 from 2008 to 2011 on the Maine Racing Circuit. In 2009 she competed in the Rolex International Women’s Keel Boat Championship.
Somehow, in between it all, she also fished as the primary sternman aboard a local 28-foot lobster boat. In her “quiet” time, she works with Paul and Wendy Johnson at the Red Cup Coffee House. In the past she has also coached sailing at the Southport Yacht club as primary 420 instructor. Her brother, Sam, holds that same position at BHYC now.
Lloyd will begin her coaching duties in April when the High School Sailing team re-convenes but in the meantime she is available to meet with interested families and sailors for both the High School and the summer Junior Sailing programs. She can be contacted through the BHYC office by calling 207-633-5750.
