Four Boothbay wrestlers place at Mid-State Conference tournament
Four Boothbay wrestlers placed in the top four for their respective weight classes Feb. 4 during the Mid-State Conference Wrestling Tournament in Dixfield. Boothbay was one of nine conference teams competing at the event hosted by Dirigo High School.
Seahawk wrestler Michael Ripley had the best showing with a third place finish in the 220-pound division. Three other Boothbay wrestlers posted fourth place results: Draco Peaslee (160), Brandon Andrews (170), and Cameron Crocker (195).
Boothbay wrestlers dramatically improved their performance from a year ago. In 2016, only Peaslee placed in the top four at the meet. Of the nine Boothbay wrestlers, seven were seeded in the top five for the 14 weight classifications. Those wrestlers were Dylan Peters, Grant Giles, John Pray, Alex Bryer, Ripley, Crocker and Andrews.
Boothbay finished the regular season with a 4-9 dual meet record. The Seahawks defeated Oak Hill twice, Madison and Oceanside. Senior Nick Labonte competed in the 132-pound class. He compiled a 0-4 mark before an injury sidelined him for the season. Peters, a senior, wrestled in the 145-pound division. He finished the regular season with a 6-9 mark. Pray, a freshman, compiled a 5-11 record in the 170- and 182-pound divisions. Andrews, a senior, won eight and lost three in the 170- and 182-pound divisions. Crocker, a junior, capped his second season as a wrestler with a school best 13-3 record in the 195-pound class. Last year, Crocker placed fourth in the 182-pound division at the Class C State Championships.
The conference tournament was the beginning of three consecutive championship wrestling weekends for high school wrestlers. On Feb. 11, Boothbay, along with Mid-State Wrestling Conference foes and Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference teams Lincoln and Erskine academies, travel to Wells High School for the Class B South State Regional Qualifying tournament. Wrestlers who place in the top six in each weight class advance to the Feb. 18 Class B State Championship meet at Bucksport High School.
