Boothbay boys place third at MVC day one
The Nordic ski season went from not enough snow to too much, as February made up for a snowless season here in the span of a week.
The Mountain Valley Conference two-day Nordic championship races were scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11 (classical at Titcomb Mountain) and Tuesday, Feb. 14 (skate at Black Mountain). Day one races were held under steady, falling powder, but day two was cancelled after the Feb. 13 blizzard made travel for many teams uncertain. As of Feb. 20, teams were still waiting to hear if the remainder of the event would be rescheduled or cancelled.
At Titcomb Mountain, Boothbay skiers performed well in excellent conditions. Blake Erhard led the Seahawks’ scorers, finishing sixth at 23:56, followed by Joey Paolillo (10th, 25:19), Duncan Drapeau (13th, 25:33) and Sam Betts (15th, 26:40). Bayly Gaughan-Carrasco crossed the finish line 19th at 27:03 and Henry Drapeau, 29th at 32:39. Boothbay finished third overall. Mt Abram won day one with 20 points, followed by Telstar with 27, Boothbay, 44, Monmouth, 84, Dirigo, 92, Winthrop, 98 and Mountain Valley, 106.
Summer Chamberlin led the Lady Seahawks across the finish line, gliding to an eightth place, 32:36 finish. Hali Goodwin finished 14th at 35:59, Olivia Paolillo, 19th, 38:34 and Riley Sullivan, 23rd, 43:03. Monmouth and Mt Abram tied for top honors with 37 points, followed by Dirigo 45, Telstar, 47, Boothbay, 63 and Mountain Valley, 78.
On Feb. 23 and 24, the Boothbay teams will compete at the state championship Nordic races at Quarry Road Trails in Waterville. In a nice change of pace, the Boothbay teams will have snow to practice on before the season-capping state meet.
