Seahawks win third straight lacrosse match
It seemed in a blink of an eye Boothbay had posted three goals in as many minutes May 4, and the match was over almost before it began against Lawrence. Boothbay midfielder Lincoln Hamblett scored the first of her two goals one minute 16 seconds into the contest. She was followed by Hannah Cola’s goal 85 seconds later. And midfielder Sydney Meader scored the first of her game-high six goals 19 seconds later.
Boothbay continued its assault on the Bulldogs’ goal by scoring 14 more in the Seahawks’ 17-6 victory over Lawrence of Fairfield at Sherman Field. Boothbay’s early dominance was credited to Hamblett’s ability to control draws which begin each half and re-start after a goal. The junior has played center midfielder since she started playing the game as a youth. Her experience is a valuable asset in her team establishing an early advantage in games.
“Lincoln does a great job winning draws,” said Meader. “Once we get control, we look to pass to Kate (Friant) who then moves quickly up the field allowing us to attack the goal.”
Hamblett said her success in winning draws results from her preparation. “Lots of practice. We (two teams’ opposing centers) start with the ball placed on our sticks. We apply equal pressure, and from there, it’s about getting the ball into the air and directing to someone,” she said.
Meader also attributed their third consecutive victory to improved passing. The team has worked on basic fundamentals of passing and catching in practice since the season began. The hard and fast passes are more accurate, contributing to more scoring opportunities. “Earlier in the season, we dropped balls left and right, but our passing has improved to the point where it’s sped up our transition game resulting in a lot of quick goals,” she said.
Seahawk Jackie McLoon had five goals, Kate Friant had two goals and one assist, and Jo Shaw had two goals. Boothbay goalkeeper Page Brown made 13 saves.
Boothbay is now 3-1 and will host Lincoln Academy (1-2) on May 8 and Oceanside (2-1) on May 9.
