Nordic team rides the wave
Although the Boothbay Region High School Nordic skiing team was unable to place in the top-10, the Seahawks still had several strong performances during the January 19 Maranacook Wave Race.
Overall the boys finished 18th while the girls team finished 15th.
Sophia Thayer again led the Seahawks; her time of 19 minutes and 58.6 seconds propelled her to an 18th-place finish.
Arden McSwain (24:25.2) finished 85th, Shaylee Sibley (26:33.5) was 104th, Maya Schwehm (26:39.5) was 105th and Angela Machon (31:53) was 133rd.
Robert Campbell was the Seahawks' top finisher on the boys side; the junior placed 42nd with a time of 17:05.3.
Benn Scully was next for Boothbay with a time of 19:09.4, which placed him 79th. Kyler Carty (19:22.1) was 83rd, Alex Owen (19:47.3) was 95th, and Zach Vise (21:03.5) was 114th.
David Machon (23:06) finished 145th, Raymond Perry (24:08.2) was 148th, Jack Hasch (25:08.2) was 152nd with Kyle Alamo (25:26.1) on his heels in 153rd and Trystan Mercier (29:25.6) was 161st to round out the Seahawk squad.
The Maranacook Wave Race was a large race with 21 schools and 167 skiers on the boys side and 140 skiers from 19 teams on the girls side in the race.
Hampden's Dustin Ramsey won the individual boys race in 13:53.3 while Gould's Sadie James won the girls race in 16:36.8.
Gould would go on to win both boys and girls divisions.
Seahawks compete in Leavitt
The Seahawks also competed in a closely contested race during the January 12 Hornet Classic in Leavitt.
Slightly more than two minutes was all that separated the winner, Mt. Blue's Sarah Wade, from 11th-place finisher Francesca Governali of Cape Elizabeth.
It was that tightly-wound group that the Lady Seahawks tried to elbow into.
Sophia Thayer was tops among the Seahawks, with a time of 24:28.9 and a 53rd-place finish.
Maya Schwehm (27:22.7) finished 84th, Arden McSwain (27:37.1) was 86th, Shaylee Sibley (30:08.2) was 112th and Angela Machon finished in 122nd with a time of 31:58.3.
Portland's Ben Allen was the top overall finisher on the boys side with a time of 14:51.8.
Robert Campbell was tops for Boothbay with a time of 18:58.8 and a 44th-place finish.
Kyler Carty (21:05.3) was 78th, Benn Scully (21:24.7) was 86th, Brady Duncan (23:04.2) was 105th and Dan Murray (23:37.1) was 111th.
There was a solid block of Seahawk skiers with Zach Vise (24:58.7) finishing 126th, Raymond Perry (25:00.7) 127th, David Machon (25:02.5) 128th and Jack Hasch (25:28.3) finishing in 130th place. Rounding out the slate of Boothbay skiers was Kyle Alamo (27:36.5) in 139th place and Trystan Mercier (28:02.6) in 145th place.
Maranacook swept the event, with the Maranacook girls squad finishing ahead of Portland and Oxford Hills to round out the top three. Boothbay would eventually finish in 18th-place.
On the boys side Mt. Blue finished second and Portland was third behind Maranacook. Boothbay finished 13th.
