Duncan Drapeau: Staying in New England to study environmental science

Duncan Drapeau plays first singles for the Boothbay Region High School tennis team and this past fall finished his four-year Seahawk football career as the starting quarterback. He said he’s enjoyed the most success in tennis but that he will miss the lessons he learned in football.

“Being a team sport, football teaches you a lot,” said Drapeau, who will be packing up some of his belongings and heading out to western Massachusetts to attend Clark University in Worcester this fall.

Drapeau, the son of Susan and David Drapeau of Boothbay, is interested in studying environmental science and ecology.

Why did he choose Clark University?

“Clark is in a good location,” said Drapeau. “I wanted to stay in New England and I really like the program they offer. I’ll be looking into getting into the five-year accelerated master’s program and Clark is a better value school.”

Having taken “a bunch of AP courses” during the past two years, Drapeau said he feels well-prepared for college.

“I’ve also learned not to procrastinate as much and to do everything on time or ahead of time,” said Drapeau.

He said he's glad he's attended a small school where you can communicate better with the teachers. “They are always there to talk to if you have a problem,” he said. He said he'll miss the small school camaraderie, the students and the coaches.

Besides tennis and football, Drapeau has also done Nordic skiing and has participated with the Outing and Interact clubs.

His brother, Henry, is a sophomore at BRHS and Duncan offers this advice for him and the other undergraduates: “Get started ahead of time in looking at and preparing for colleges. Find a good balance in managing your time away from school and sports to work on your future.”

During the summer months, Drapeau has worked for John's Lawns and Cabbage Island Clambakes, where he’ll be moving from helping set up the bakes to being a waiter on the island this summer.

Other than school interests, Duncan enjoys skiing, hiking and snowboarding.
