Seahawks await big showdown
With still just one blemish on their record against 13 victories, the Boothbay Region High School boys varsity basketball team will get to face the undefeated, defending state champion Dirigo Cougars on Thursday night, Jan. 24, at Porter Memorial.
The Seahawks have jumped into first place in the Heal standings when you add in the win over Mt. Abram that had not been reported as of Wednesday morning. The Seahawks fought their way to three more wins over the last week as they defeated Oak Hill, 71-47; Mt. Abram, 65-46; and Lisbon, 61-51.
On Thursday, Jan. 17, the Oak Hill Raiders found themselves down 18-6 after one quarter and eventually suffered their second defeat of the season at the hands of the Seahawks. The visiting Raiders did rebound to score 21 second quarter points to cut the deficit to seven at the break. Sophomore John Hepburn led the Seahawks with 25 points as he shot very well from the floor hitting on 69 percent of his attempts.
Two nights later, the Seahawks made the long journey to Strong to take on the Mt. Abram Roadrunners. A three-point play by Anthony DiMauro and two hoops by John Hepburn helped the Seahawks out to a 7-2 start. But the hosts pieced together a 7-3 stretch over the remainder of the quarter to trail by just one after eight minutes.
The Seahawks found themselves in some foul trouble as John Hepburn picked up his second personal and Joseph DiMauro his third early in the second period. After hitting on two from the line, Anthony DiMauro went coast to coast and then, after a 3-pointer by the Roadrunners, set up Shawn Simmons for his first of two big baskets in the quarter. Simmons also added two from the line during an 8-0 run that pushed the lead to double digits. The Seahawks were stepping on the pedal late in the half as Anthony DiMauro took a missed free throw by Mt. Abram and quickly advanced the ball to Andrew Hallinan for a transition hoop. That, coupled with a drive to the hoop by DiMauro, gave the visitors a 29-18 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, the Seahawks continued to pull away as Hallinan connected on a three-pointer from the right wing and Evan Hepburn added a pair of hoops. Anthony DiMauro led the Seahawks with 20 points and six assists while John Hepburn added 17 points as he was just getting warmed up for Monday night.
At Lisbon on Monday, January 21, Hepburn lit it up for a career-high 32 points as the Seahawks jumped out to a 13-4 lead after eight minutes and never looked back during the 61-51 decision. Hepburn also pulled down seven rebounds. Anthony DiMauro claimed ten rebounds and set up the offense with nine assists.
After 14 games and with four left on the regular season schedule, John Hepburn leads the club with 239 points on the season or 17.1 points per game while Anthony DiMauro has scored 200 points or 14.3 per game while leading the team with 7.1 rebounds per game and 6.1 assists per game.
