Southport Junior Yacht Club
The fog insulates Cozy Harbor today, making the few swim tests done today cold and slightly uncomfortable, yet rewarding. Katherine Sexton and Nathan Schmidt successfully completed their swim tests and entered the beginner program. The turnabout field is filling up with privately owned turnabouts that have been donated to the program for the beginner classes.
SJYCSF sailors participated in the Portland Junior Olympics on July 11 and 12. Southport Opti class sailors did well in the ever changing conditions.Out of 36 competitors, Ryan Peterson landed in 6th place overall, but 2nd place in “Blue Fleet” (sailors age 12) with two second place finishes throughout the week. Sawyer Bates ended the week in 14th place with William Moen and Lucas Thress in 21st and 22nd, respectively. Sean Morrison was in 24th. Thank you to Stephen Morrison for transporting the three 420 trailers to and from Portland for J.O.s.
The SYC Club 420 Sailors had even better results overall. Out of 35 competitors, Max Freund and his crew Sara Morrison got 6th place overall. Martha Rand and Nate Rideout got 11th place. Tia Freund and Elsa Bates were in 13th place with Dane Phippen and Jenna Peterson in 14th.
The Friday fun day last week was an opportunity for the beginner class to sail in the Club 420 boats with SYC Instructors and on the J-24 with Captain Sneath. Though the wind was oscillating all day and never that strong, the kids got a foreshadowing experience of sailing 420s, the most expert boat in the SJYCSF fleet.
The Ice Cream Social is Thursday, July 20; bowls are $4 with $1 refills and all proceeds benefit the SJYCSF program.
The Club 420, Turnabout and Opti classes also had their respective race days for the July Series this week. For the 420s, skipper Max Freund and crew Elsa Bates were in 1st place this week, with Ryan McCann and Sara Morrison in 2nd and Nathan Chatterton and Mason Erhard were in 3rd. The Opti class results have Luke Thress in 1st with Connor McWhan in 2nd and Ryan Peterson in 3rd. The Turnabout class had Brian Goldsmith and Charlotte Wall in 1st, Alex Goldsmith and Ann Sophie in 2nd, and Hannah McWhan and Camden Swan in 3rd.
