Gregory L. Knapp

Mon, 04/17/2023 - 10:00am

Gregory Lester Knapp, age 74, of Boothbay Harbor passed away surrounded by the love of his family and friends on April 13, 2023. Greg battled diligently against acute myeloblastic leukemia for the last three years and was palpably close to beating it - he fought incredibly hard.

Greg was born on Nov. 29, 1948, to Charles and Coletta (Heitkemper) Knapp. He grew up in Hamilton, Ohio and volunteer drafted into the Army in 1968. He arrived in Vietnam in August of 1968 and became wounded in October, resulting in his signature lumber. He was later honorably discharged from the Army. He then transitioned into the grocery business working for a grocery broker and doing merchandising. In October 1994 he moved to Maine, settling in Boothbay Harbor, where he and his late wife, Kayce McDaniel-Knapp, opened the popular "Angels Unawares," which was a beloved part of the community for 14 years. Visitors came by "the shop" year after year just to share a hello with him.

He was known to be quiet but was always listening and observing the world around him. His eyes had a twinkle that was indicative of his jovial nature and the genuine kindness he extended to all. Greg could often be found basking in the sun while "people watching," and rarely without a smile on his face. He wore shorts and sandals well into the Maine winters, loved his kitties, and always indulged in all of Kayce's spur of the moment adventures.

He is survived by his siblings, Gary Knapp (Diana Knapp), Ronald Knapp (Barb Knapp), and Sharon Clark (Herbert Clark); children, Heather Lawrence and Holly Soloman (Sean Soloman); stepchildren, Mike McDaniel and Kelli McDaniel; grandchildren, Kayla, Alexis, Jordan, Riley, Aubrey (Jake) and Eden (Adam); and great-grandchildren Syus, Brinley, Griffin, Noah and Eliot; in addition to countless friends who were loved like family.

A Catholic Mass will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Boothbay Harbor, with a celebration of life to follow, date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers we ask for those who wish to please make donations to the American Legion: American Legion Post 36, P.O. Box 874, Boothbay Harbor, ME 04538.

Hall’s of Boothbay has care of the arrangements. To extend online condolences, light a candle for Greg, or to share a story or picture, please visit is Book of Memories at www.hallfuneralhomes.com
